We are sure that even after 3 years, Jemma has still something to say. And it is able to move people and bring something positive in them. That's what happened with a new Jemma fan and a huge Jemma Fan fic fan. Because Sophie has met Jemma in a very unconventional way.... first, thanks to a video on YT and then falling in love with some fan fiction she found ion the net. Only in a second moment she was able to see all the episodes wilt subtitle. So we can say that her love for this serie is due to the Jemma fan fiction writer! And do you know something? she became a writer of Jemma fan fic herself because this great community gave her the right impulse to start to write again.
Do you wanna listen to her story?
I am sure you want.
So let's read her words.
I write a blog. It’s nothing spectacular or has a mass of followers but it does two things, it’s a place for me to encourage everyone to grow their own greens and it also allows me to learn new things around aspects in my life that I love or new ideas I want to try out. That being gardening, environmental issues, photography and creative writing. Through those areas I’ve also managed to cover huge ground in my own self development and that’s where Jemma fanfic comes in.
Let me tell you how I came to fall in love with all things Jemma.
I came accross Hand Aufs Herz, and in particular the story of Jemma quite by chance. A montage of Jemma clips was suggested to me on You Tube one evening and I thought I’d have a look.
The montage turned into 6 videos. I had no idea at the time what the storyline was, and because I can’t understand German (and couldn’t figure out how to put the subs on) I actually thought the blonde girl was after the brunnette. Turns out that once I’d switched the subs on, during the last vid, I was wrong. So I had to watch all 6 videos again!
The actors were so in tune with one another and the storylines so well written it all felt rather beautiful to watch.
With anything I find myself having piqued interest to I decided to do a bit of the old googling about on who the couple were, and what this program was about.
That was when I discovered that not only did the program have the enticing Jemma storyline but that the whole show was on a similar footing to Glee. They sing? They dance? Okay, so by now I was slightly excited by this new Glee-esk and did some further searching on YouTube to find a few snippets of the show I knew now as Hand Aufs Herz. Unfortunately most of it was without subs and I could only imagine the rest of the storylines.
Back on YouTube, and back to the same 6 videos I’d now watched probably 10 times each, I started to read the comments. That brought me to a message from one person had put on in reply to the long requests of “where can I get more of Jemma?” to see that someone called Jewel had apparently written a fanfiction in response to the Jemma storyline, called ‘The Love I Found in You’, so I went over to her page and had a gander.
That was when I was totally blown away. Not only had this writer managed to single handedly write the entire Jemma storyline from the beginning, in line with the HaH original story but had interwoven further stories around Jemma that brought with it a better understanding of the characters and I was absolutely hooked. I had no idea Fanfiction could be this...this amazing.
The characters became more emotional, more multi-dimensional with their relationship and I read all 1485 pages in less than five days. How talented that writer was. They had written the whole thing on their own without any single recognition by the show. They just wrote it because they wanted to, never even knowing if anyone would ever read it but still writing it. That jolted me from my very short comings in writing and what I thought publication was about.
My searches then went over to Facebook to see if I was the only slightly obsessed Jemma fan at this point but turns out not only am I one of thousands, the following is as strong today as it was when the show finished 2 years ago. I joined a group called thanks Jemma - Lucy Scherer and Kasia Borek - international. I’m not sure why I chose this group to join, as there were several others but seeing as I wanted to say thanks myself it seemed an appropriate place to start.
That was when I met Globe Mallow online who kindly shared the vast array of tv clips, all with subs, music and various other extras that she’d been involved in co-ordinating over the years. I was rather shocked. How friendly and kind this person was. Again they’d spent literally hours translating every single word that ever came out of the actors mouths just because they wanted everyone to share the delights of Jemma. Did they ever get recognition from the show or from the case? Not that I’m aware of.
And then from there I quite by chance fell upon another group (via Twitter) called Jemma Fanfic and that’s where I’ve found not only are there many talented writers but that they all share their love of the Jemma storyline in so many different ways.
I’m hook, lined and sinkered as far as Jemma goes. The original storyline, and the actors who played it was one great thing but to read such great writing from people whom in some cases I don’t know who they are, nor do they want to be known. For their unselfish ability to write and share so willingly, I think it is utterly incredible.
I write all this because it’s really taught me a lot about myself. What I thought I knew about writing, and indeed what I thought I knew about reading. There are many types of both and not all have to be the multi-selling, multi-million pound kind. Talent is just that - it’s in the places you least expect to find it and I’m very grateful to have stumbled upon it. I’ve not only been given inspiration to write but do it with a new mind-set.
There is one other reason I wrote my original fanfiction post on my blog, and that was to say that it’s a real shame some of this writing isn’t made real. Really great stories, and creative ideas make me feel like a firework has burst inside me and I’m going in all directions, and that is what Jemma does to me.
Most of these stories and the characters desperately need to come alive again. Of course they can’t be played by the same actors but if the right actors were found, who could portray all those wonderful characteristics I think it would really work and I do find myself wondering how I can make this happen (in my firework state of mind). I’m no media maverick but I want to see these writers getting recognition. I want to see their words speak and their descriptions played out.
So maybe you now want to start reading Sophie's story? Let's go!
